Then the child in a second burrow with its own lever not connected to anything.

I've built the mechanisms and levers, but every time I do try to link I run into a stone wall.

Just to add to what is already written: if you link lever to a door - it will work exactly like floodgate. In case you find some extra doors but not floodgates. Of course, other limitations like need for an adjacent wall still applies.
